September 9th—Portsmouth

T. E. lawrence's writing chair
Long drive here through Sunday traffic, but two wonderful stops. The first was Clouds Hill, where T. E. Lawrence lived and wrote from 1923 to his death 300 yard along the road in 1935. It's spartan, no electricity or toilet, but he made it exactly the way he wanted it, as witnessed by the custom-made chair.
The next stop was the Tank Museum at Bovington. An amazing place if you're at all into military history. Everything from the very first tank in 1915 to the latest monster. I feel a story gestating. I toook 178 photos—thank heavens for digital cameras!
And the best to last—the true highlight, the delightfully named, River Piddle, close by Puddletown, Piddlehinton, Turner's Puddle and Higher Waterston. Honest, I couldn't make this stuff up.
Things naval tomorrow.
